...Cemeteries...

A local map may tell you where cemeteries are. Look for Cemetery Rd etc, you can be sure a cemetery is or was on this road or nearby.

You know you're a genealogist when...

You have a bumper sticker that says...I brake for cemeteries..

You think everyone picnics at cemeteries..

Your fear of snakes and bugs and bears is overshadowed by the need to get through those brambles to that old gravestone..

You have your own headstone planned out..

..You're making payments on it...

There are links on the bottom of page..for now most of this is for New York State as that is where I am from. There is a link for Cyndi's on the bottom, one of the very best. It is for all over.

I try to be careful to not have duplicates or links that are not working. If I do find a site with a lot of un-working links I will try to weed the good ones out...

Can you call a cemetery beautiful? I guess if I can call one ugly I can call another beautiful. Today I went to my friend's funeral, it is a good thing I followed the procession or I never would have found the cemetery, though I have lived here 31 years now and often heard about Oakdale Cemetery I had never been there. It is absolutely beautiful. We must have gone four or five* can you believe it was actually less than a mile? *and we clocked it twice to be sure. My hubby said the same thing, it is impressive. In the older part there are crosses, large monuments. Beautiful headstones, steps. Now when you go into the second section this stops, most are headstones.

You go on to the next section and there are only markers. OK I will put my foot in my mouth, funerals are so expensive now, I guess people can afford no more.

I have often said I do not like it where we bought plots. I do have a feeling you can probably no longer purchase in the old section of this cemetery.

It seems I may have seen a web site for this cemetery, but I could not find it, I will continue to look.

My hubby made the comment..if anyone ever puts plastic flowers on my grave..I said well a lot of these are silk..and some are pretty..he says ..well if someone can not afford a few dollars for a flower..of course I replied.. well you can't get much for a few dollars..he says well you can get a petunia! So we joked about that all week-end..***in 2003 we still are***

I am told of instances where I am told headstones were plowed under. Except for basic care many cemeteries are not taken care of. Headstones are on the ground. I urge any churches, boy-girl scout groups to look into helping in this area.

Do remember this. Many cemeteries may once have been on a main road, and no longer are. Up home to find one cemetery you have to hike almost two miles back into the woods. You can go part of the way with a car, I sure could never do it. I got to thinking about it and made some inquiries, this use to be the main road.
Can't find someone? You know where they lived, are unable to find where they are buried.

A few thoughts...

Did this person live along a county, state line? If so, there is a good chance they could be buried elsewhere.

Where is the closest big town?

What church did they belong to? Could they be buried in a neighboring town's church cemetery?

Though we hear of family plots, you can be sure there are probably others buried there too..

Date your cemeteries. If one goes from 1840-1900, another 1890-present. Where were people before 1840 buried?

My daughter says this is from an actual grave. It says..

If doing some family history for future generations you may want to add a map showing where cemeteries are. Up home there are cemeteries on both sides of one road. So, if they ever need to widen the road this will be a problem. I do not think they could put in another two lanes. The possibility of adding one lane might work.

Many had family plots omeone had kept track of burials in their heads! Of course, as these people passed away this information was lost.

Supposedly my great grandparents had 16 children, the information I was given shows many died young, yet there is no record of their burials.

I inquired about this. We now believe most or all of them were buried in a cemetery with no markers on their graves. From what my mother and aunt told me, I found the location in the cemetery, it does look as if there would be room for them there and one of the children is buried close by with a marker.

I did send for two death certificates, they helped, but, did not solve the problem as one only told where they were buried, nothing about a cemetery name, the other did list a cemetery name, however, there is question to which cemetery this is.

Ways to find old cemeteries..

ASK..ASK..ASK..
look in old newspapers
contact funeral homes
send for death certificates
call libraries, historical groups, genealogical groups
contact town supervisors, town clerks, town registrars of deeds or vital statistics
look for books on the subject

..agency....Association For Gravestone Studies

..Obituary Daily Times..

..Immigrant Ships....this has ship names, passenger listings..a GREAT site..

..Abandon Wilson Cemetery, Brevard NC..

Western North Carolina....WESTERN NC..

Take a camera or two. If this is something real important, someplace you may never get back to..why take chances? A throw a way camera is a great idea.

Reading headstones can be a real problem. I have heard of using flour, talc to dust headstones and then read them. Yesterday I read about using shaving cream. This might just be the best thing to try. You put it on, then wipe it.

**I am trying to be sure I have not listed any sites twice, this is a job! I generally find it is best to list, then wait a bit and re-check!

Cyndi's site lists around 200 cemeteries. There is really a lot of information and this page has a place to report links that are not working, so, if you find any let them know. It would take one person a long time to check them all.

I will add more as time permits, but, I do not think you could find a better site than this one!

..Cyndi's cemetery listings..

..NEW YORK LISTINGS..

..cemetery regulations etc NY..

...New York Cemeteries..

..Delaware CO NY..others..
You can search for cemetery SURNAMES too..

NY GenWeb has listings for many cemeteries. Rather than list any of these individually, I will list the NY page only. You can go on here and search for any county you want....NY GenWeb..

This site does have a lot of GenWeb sites, but many are not GenWeb. At this time I do not have the time to list individually, so, I will put this on here as it is ..Many NY Cemeteries..

..OTHER AREAS..

..US cemeteries..

...

..INFO..

Be sure to investigate any of the groups reading cemetery headstones. Is this a group that is still doing this? Are they actually using information people obtain? How are they using it? Try to talk to someone else doing this first. If you do all of this work and then it is not used can someone else use the information? Just a few things to think about. Many people have put good sites and information on the internet. But many pages are started, then left with no more being done on them.
