Kool and the Gang
Under The Boardwalk
North to Alaska

I got to see Kool and The Gang at a concert, they were very good.

A true story....Some years ago I worked in a 7-11 store. One of the girls told me if I really wanted to cool off to sit in the big cooler for a while. So, one night I go into the cooler, pull me up a milk crate, position myself where I can clearly see the outside door and sit down.

I'm really enjoying myself, cooling off, reading a magazine. A car pulls up, the lights shine right in on me in the cooler. I say, Oh! No!. I scurry out. It can't be! But, it is! The district manager. What on earth is he doing here at 9 at night? And, yes, I did it again.

Remember, it's not hot flashes, it's power surges.

Now some of you may look at this and laugh, when I am on Geraldo or Oprah and have a best seller on the booklist we shall see who laughs last. Those of us who are hot all the time know it is not a laughing matter. We will do practically anything to cool off..

Since my husband tells me this is all in my head, I have tried to convince myself I am an iceberg. This does not seen to have worked very well, except for the puddles I leave behind.

I have tried this on many a sweltering 99 degrees in the shade day. I walk along repeating to myself ..."I am an iceberg...I am an iceberg".

I never have cared for the heat much. Summers in upstate (anything above the city) New York even got the best of me. When I first married and moved to Dover, Delaware, I decided then and there I wanted to go no further south. I am not really sure how I ended up down here. Someone must have hypnotized me.

I can tolerate Charlotte, North Carolina. I lived there for two years. Kingsport, Tennessee was much hotter than I thought it would be, but, not as humid and, and, and the nights do cool off.

Do not let anyone fool you into thinking an ocean breeze will help! What breeze! Where is it?

Going forward here! Now, just think about it, if you are cool you can put on long sleeve shirts, sweaters, jackets, coats, even a fur coat. But if you are hot, how much can you do? Walk down the street in a bathing suit? Halter top! Ha! Ha!... even I, an accused women's libber, can hardly refrain myself.

Now, I wonder about something. Why do people have air conditioners in their homes, cars if they love the heat so much .

A few years ago someone from California came to visit, they did not care for the weather at all. I told them I was under the impression it was hot out in California too. They said it was, but, not so humid. One proclaimed living here was like taking a bath and never being able to dry off, another nail hit on the head.

My daughter says if I come to California where she now lives, I will never come back to the east coast. I love cool weather, it makes me feel good.

Recently, I took a trip to New York. I looked for snow all the way up there, saw none at all, sure enough, as soon as we crossed those ever loving mountains, there it was, in all it's glory. SNOW!!!

Coming down by the bucket, piled a few feet high. The next day I went out and ran around in my short sleeves and shoes. We even walked to the store, I love it. Snowed the next day too, so pretty.

Now to the serious stuff---How to keep cool---or at least try

Recently my three year old granddaughter asked my daughter to get her a washcloth, one like GG'S.

Freeze, yes, I say freeze wash cloths. I keep one or two in the freezer at most times, really I like to put them in there, let them get not quit frozen. Refreshing, especially when going on a trip in our un-air conditioned truck. My daughter says she can always tell when I am visiting, a frozen washcloth is always in the freezer.

At times I freeze hand towels. I make them kind of in a U. I put one around my neck, especially good when doing yard work.

Keep your cold cream, lotion in the refrigerator. This is a real refresher. Now, I got smart, I have put a bottle of strawberry mist, some cornstarch baby powder in the fridge too. Isn't cold cream supposed to be cold? Just a thought.

MMMM--perhaps I should put my clothes in the deep-freeze an hour before putting them on.

For many years I have put my cucumber peels in a little dish in the freezer. We were always told cucumber was good for your complexion. This way you can truly be cool as a cucumber.

Get yourself a 25,000 BTU air-conditioner. Who cares how much it costs to run it.

Now, please do not laugh too hard at this one. Last night I put my potato chips in the fridge. I love cool, anything cool. They are pretty good.....

When you take a shower remember to cool down before you get out.

Take a spray bottle full of ice water to the beach with you.

Today I am eating a cold, yes, I say cold, sauerkraut sandwich. For you non vegetarians, this is a hot dog roll with mustard and saurkraut. When I make hot dogs, I have the roll with hot beans, sauerkraut, perhaps a slice of cheese. I generally fix a cold bean and sauerkraut sandwich later. They are really good. I've eaten cold bean sandwiches for years.

If they would sell hot dogs with sauerkraut here they would make a million!!

Load the freezer with ice cream, fudgsicles, ice cubes. At times I have been known to take ice cubes, wrap in a wash cloth and freeze the whole thing

Take a bath and add ice cubes to the water. Real refreshing.

Make plenty of iced coffee, tea. Home-made lemonade. For those of us who can not have sugar, make fresh lemonade with Equal, I can't tell the difference. Add a few frozen strawberries when you go to drink this.

Sit out in the sun when you want, but, have a sprinkler going on you. Buy one of those children's toys, who cares what people think...

Buy the children a water gun, fill it with cold, cold water, tell the kids not to spray you.

Forget about cooking, eat cool...

Take a plastic dish pan, fill with cool water, ice cubes, a bit of lotion, soak your feet in this.

One hot summer in Charlotte at Wendys with no air, we finally gave in, out we went to a movie and dinner to cool off for just a while.

My son Shawn says take an ice cube, rub it on the inside of your arm.

Take the green grapes, freeze some, these really are good.

A cool recipe....

Pork n Bean Salad---

I chill these overnight, take any size can of beans, I prefer Van Camp's, add chopped onion, green pepper. If I have chives, I add these too. Refrigerate until cold, I may add a bit of Swiss and cheddar or provolone cheese to the top just before serving.

A few years ago my brother commented that only I could take a can of pork and beans and make a gourmet meal out of them. In winter I just use onion and melt cheese on top. I may add mustard, catsup, whatever I feel like. Good eating! Everyone does seem to like them.

...And, play it cool stay in school!!...

Since writing this I have been to California, I love the weather there, El NINo and all. It does get warm, but, it is not humid. I am concerned about my daughter moving back east, I'm afraid she will not tolerate it well. They do not even use an air-conditioner, my daughter says by the time you cool off it is cool outside anyway.

My hubby tells people about the time we went to Florida. When he came to the motel room, the windows were actually covered with moisture, he walked in and says "You could hang meat in here, it's so cold!!" I loved it...Some like it cool!! ...We do finally have an air-conditioned truck. I could take no more

I still dislike the heat, I never will get use to it if I live here another 30 years. I tell everyone I am retiring to Alaska.

I have seen the hint in magazines about putting lotion in your fridge. I have gotten so I even take a wet washcloth and put it across my face while sleeping, it seems to cool me off a bit. I even put my peanuts in the refrigerator now. I was told it was my hormones and hot flashes, but, why didn't I have them in California?

Now remember this is all in fun, we do not want to go into shock by adding ice cubes to our tub water!!
