Regretfully the Mattison home recently caught fire. Mom says this home was over 100 years old, the original Mattison home had burned, then this one was built.

On the 1860 census it looks like a Louisa..12 Maddison is added in. They all spelled the name Maddison at that time! I found the name spelled Madison..Maddison..Mattison.

GW is Gideon, we now believe WW is William or De Witt. His full name was probably William De Witt, thus WW!

This may be the link to the Browns we were always told about. Frank Mattison married Betsey Brown. Frank was WWs son. I have had contact with his granddaughter, this is what we have figured out. But what happened to all the rest? I basically know about all of Mary Jane and George's children. One cousin recently called mom and told her the last of their cousins had passed away. This leaves four in mom's family and the one who called.

George is my great grandfather.

The Mattisons lived in a big, nice home. The picture looks as if it may have been taken on the back porch. There was a summer kitchen in the back built of stone, mom says it was two stories. People sleeped out there in the summer even though the house had 4-5 bedrooms. Mom says there were dances with live bands, she just told me Pop Brucher made a fiddle and played at dances! Mom says it was a lot of fun.

You went in the back of the house, there was a porch, kitchen, you went into the living room, I recall a big buffet going across the whole wall, there was a parlor to the side where mom says they kept candy in fancy jars and dishes. Mom and her siblings went to their grandmas for Sunday dinner, then all went for a walk.

Across the front was an enclosed porch, while touring the home in 1998 they commented on how the window frames were fitted together.

AND, I always remember an inside bathroom! On the side was a garage in later years, there was a huge barn in the back. The land went quite a ways, though some was sold later. Mary Mattison apparently sold a lot of land as did others to Mr Smallwood.

In later years Uncle George Mattison lived in the house. He would have a New Year's Party. At midnight you called everyone you knew.

The children of Mary Jane and George Knox Mattison were

Clinton..Jan 20 1883
Harrison..Feb 1 1884
Lillian..Aug 26 1885
Orlando..Feb 16 1887
Addie..Feb 14 1889
John..Aug 17 1893
