John and Elizabeth Long Queen
Pherby Pearl Queen Ward Campbell Jewell
Vance Forrest Ward Sr
Vance Forrest Ward Jr
Ronald Ward
Shawn Forrest Ward
Kara Ward
We find Pherby's name spelled many ways. However, the spelling Pherby is on her headstone, though this does not make it right!
I believe I have found Pherby, Phurby, Ferabee, Pearley and Pearl. My hubby says they all called her MA and MA Jewell was all he remembered her as.
Now we are told Pherby was born in Graham County NC to John and Elizabeth Long Queen. However, I am unable to find them on the 1880 census there. I do have a copy of Pherby's death certificate.
We really know very little about these people. The story has been told they are Cherokee Indian, lived where Fontana Reservoir is at one time. The Queen name does appear on the Baker Roll, I have to investigate further to find out who our relatives are. I am told others are doing this, but do not know who this is. I could seem to obtain no help in Cherokee last summer.
.
Vance Ward's sisters Sis and Clare were at the Ward re-union in 1997 last summer. In 1997 twins Bud and Sis and twins Odie and Modie and Clare are all still alive. Rick and Vance passed away. These are Vance's siblings. Clare was going to be 88 that week, Sis and Bud are 78. Rick, Pherby's daughter looked like an indian. She wore the braids and all.
Pherby's first husband was Alex Ward, he was a river runner, he ran along the river looking for stills, he was killed doing this while Vance was young. We are told around 8 or 9 years of age. We are now told this happened in Tryon and Alex is buried in Tryon. No death certificate could be found. We now have found Alex and Pherby in Polk County in 1900. They lived in Tryon where Vance was born. There are 4 other children. Johnny, Juanita, Mandy and Bonnie. We are now told Pherby married Alexander Campbell who had 14 children already, they then had 6 making a total of 25 children and step children for Pherby!
Ma Jewel (Pherby) and her last husband are buried in Brevard in the cemetery by the church going into Brevard, they are on the left in the back.
This is Oak Grove (Methodist) Cemetery. My husband remembers Pherby, he says she looked like his grandpa Vance and was tall and thin and liked to fish. Liked good home cooking and perhaps she made doilies.

This is an e-mail sent to me and with permission I add it here..Marge...March 17 02
I have over 250 messages on my computer..many of which I would love to keep..but am going to have to delete some of them...before I do ...I would like to say this: I am so grateful to Marjorie Ward for this very precious information on our family history. I remember Aunt Pherby very well...she was the sister of my Grandpa, Robert Issac Queen. They were from Graham County, N.C. originally but lived in the Marble, N.C. and Maltby, N.C. area before moving on to the Brevard, N.C. area. Grandpa Robert Issac married Lula Hooper daughter of Dr. John Hooper, a pioneer doctor in Graham County, N. C. Aunt Pherby did not look anything at all like my Grandpa, Bob. She was tall, slender, had dark hair, complexion and eyes. She wore her hair up..had gold earrings and her head shook slightly with some health problem. She was a neat lady and wore dark clothes when I saw her. I do not remember how old I was or how old she was....but she came to our house at Maltby, N.C. Her brother, who was my grandpa Bob, was short, heavy, had red hair....liked to dance an "irish jig"...and was a very lovable guy.
If any of my cousins can add anything to this or correct me ...please feel free to do so.... When Grandpa Robert Issac "Bob" Queen and Grandma Lula left Maltby to live in Brevard, N.C. they left behind the following children...Ethel Queen Trull Hurt, Nola Queen Hert, (Ethel's husband, Troy spelled his name HURT AND HIS NEPHEW FRED WHO MARRIED NOLA SPELLED HIS NAME HERT..) Also living in the Maltby area was Wayne Queen who married Ruby Bettis. Sheridan Queen who married Lassie Palmer had moved to the Louisville/Maryville Tennesse area. Vinson Queen who married Lou Ella Isham and Fred Queen who married Georgia Hall had already moved to the Brevard and later Enka, N.C. area. After Fred's wife died he married Betty ____Queen.
Grandma and Grandpa Bob and Lula were brought back to Moss Cemetary in Marble, N. C. and buried close to Greatgrandmother, Betty Long Queen and Greatgrandmother, Sarah Wilson Hooper and Great Uncle Dick Wilson. Sarah Hooper was the daughter of Jackson Lafayette Wilson, a brick manufacturer and builder of the Regal Hotel and other buildings in Murphy, N. C. ...according to the geneology "The Wilson Family of North Carolina & Their Desceendants" by Alma Wilson Potter.
In the fall of 1998, my late husband, Eldridge who was killed in a boating accident the following June...by a bass fisherman headed for a "weigh-in" in a bass tournament ....and I , attended the Hooper Reunion on the Cherohala Parkway, near Hooper's Bald. We located and visited the Carver Cemetary where Samuel Queen, Samuel Queen, Jr. and many other Queen's are buried. This was a great joy for me as I had visited the Mormon Library in Salt Lake City while we were showing in a trade show in the Salt Palace a couple of years before and found some names and locations on both sides of our family which led me to find Samuel, Sr. There are several Queen's in the Heritage Books of Copperhill and Ducktown, Tn. with the same names. Samuel Queen which cannot be the same as ours...but with connections to the West Buffalo areas of Graham County....The Blairsville, Georgia Library has books with Hooper and Queen geneology also, one by I believe the correct name is Mary Hooper Crocker...has a picture of Callie Queen Hooper...who is a sister to Aunt Pherby and Grandpa Bob............... .but I know my family came from the Hooper's Bald...West Buffalo areas of Graham County, N. C. ...
Thank you so much Marjorie...Maybe others will add to this..and correct me where I am wrong....Love, Bobbie Trull Loudermilk.
