Mom always has everything the same year to year, decade to decade. With me nothing is ever the same from year to year. Always something new and I do put out a spread. I guess it is because I am such a fussy eater. That way I figure if I put out plenty there has to be something everyone likes. What I still do a lot is ask those coming what their favorite dish and dessert are. We cook enough for the weekend. As much of it fresh as possible. I do go for the specials, this year it is cauliflower and broccoli. I cook both in one pot, I take some to just serve with butter, salt, pepper. What is left I add some milk to and throw in some cheese. Real cheese. I generally keep a bit of it for salad too. Since I have already bought two heads of cauliflower and have the broccoli and celery and cheese I will make this, I use no exact recipe and I do love this. Generally we give a meal or so away to those who do not cook. I have always wanted to put on a big meal for ANYONE to come, some year I will do it! Marvelicious Thanksgiving..poetry..more at bottom of page....Marv.. While growing up Thanksgiving was a big deal. When Uncle Ralph and Aunt Beulah moved to Long Island he worked with poultry and would bring a huge turkey up to the country for dinner. Grandma Brucher would come over the night before to make the dressing. She would put one of these grinders on the table, you clamped it to the side of the table. Then she ground the onion and celery for the dressing, it was put together to sit overnight. Grandma Brucher made pumpkin and mince meat pies too. Mom would make apple pie. Perhaps a lemon meringue. Were they good. Everyone got together and made a few days of it, cooking away. ...while watching Martha Stewart she mentioned using real leaves..I did exactly that one year My daughter had a large table and I had bought her a way too large table cloth..I folded it over in the middle...she had a nice arrangement..we put that over and you could hardly notice..I got leaves from the yard and you know me I washed them.. I lightly spray painted them with gold paint..more or less threw them on the table..and put pretty curling ribbon that I did not curl just left where it dropped..this was very pretty.. I have said I am the original Martha.. Now my motto is if Martha can do it.. I already did it.. Turkey with home made dressing The mashed potatoes were home made of course, I do not think till this day mom uses any instant ones, I love to make some fresh ones myself. The onions did not come in a jar, you bought the little pearl ones and peeled them. Us kids would set up a table in what use to be the dining room. The grown ups ate in the kitchen. Some years we had grapefruit and V-8 juice. Mom had the same meal for as long as I can remember, it seems she spent two days cooking, getting ready, we all ate way too much, by the time the dishes were done someone was ready for more and we started in again! And mom bought no paper plates! There are more recipes on these pages... If you want to make Grandma Keithley's Fruit Wine Topping it takes 30 days! I am making both the horseradish and golden carrots. No room? Wrap your sweet taters in foil, bake in the oven with the turkey. You can even freeze them and they are great later.
