Here is a great page for the kiddies..all links I checked were working..make a Groundhog mask..pop up Puppet..much more..there are all sorts of crafts for kids..I would say one of the best pages I have seen..though I do not have time right now to look at all of it..you might want to bookmark this one..NOW..
1. Make a chart showing who thinks Phil will see his shadow and who thinks he will not.
2. Have children go outside several times each day to measure their shadows. Record and discuss why it is longer or shorter at certain times.
3. Research and present reports on other animals that hibernate during the winter.
I went to a site that is selling all sorts of Ground Hog materials. I laughed at the stationery. Then I happened to remember. That was exactly what I did one year. I made Ground Hog Day stationery. I figured everyone taunts me, I'd just go along with it!

This custom was brought to the USA by people from Germany and Great Britain.
According to legend the ground hog awakens from its long winter sleep on Feb 2. If the sun is shining and the ground hog sees their shadow it is frightened and goes back into it's hole, meaning 6 more weeks of winter.
If the ground hog can not see its shadow and stays out, spring is soon to follow. Science has not confirmed this...information obtained from my Old Faithful .. World Book Encyclopedia..
The book CELEBRATIONS tells us this is also called CANDLEMANS DAY and was considered the end of the holiday season. It was considered unlucky to leave Christmas decorations up after this day. I do remember my Godmother left her tree up until February!
